Halloween - related risks

Halloween—a time of festivities, but also one that brings its own set of potential risks, particularly with fireworks involved.

Prevention of Hazards

Fireworks Safety: Use fireworks outdoors only, away from buildings and flammable materials. Follow all safety instructions that come with the fireworks.

Costume Safety: Opt for flame-resistant materials and avoid long trailing fabric.

General Safety: Keep emergency numbers and first aid kits readily accessible.

First Aid

Burns: Immediately cool the burn under cold running water for at least 10 minutes, then cover with a sterile dressing.

Eye Injury: Do not rub the eye. Shield it with something protective, like a polystyrene cup, and seek medical advice immediately.

Ingestion of Harmful Substances: Do not induce vomiting. Call 111 or 999.

Whom to Contact First and When

Non-emergencies: Your GP or NHS 111 can often handle less severe situations.

Emergencies: For life-threatening situations, call 999 or go directly to A&E.

Red Flags and Emergency Services

Breathing Difficulties: If someone is struggling to breathe, suspicion of smoke inhalation, it's a red flag for immediate medical attention.

Severe Burns: Burns that blister immediately or cover large portions of the body.

Unconsciousness: If someone is unconscious or has a reduced level of consciousness, it's crucial to call emergency services immediately.

Severe Allergic Reactions: If someone experiences anaphylaxis, call 999 immediately.

A&E vs Urgent Care

A&E: Go here for life-threatening emergencies.

Urgent Care: For less severe injuries and illnesses that still require prompt treatment.

I hope this overview is helpful. Stay safe and enjoy Halloween responsibly.
